The photographs on this site come from the Folk Whisperings image collection. That collection is still being catalogued, and per image credit lines are being added as each file is traced back to the person who took it.

We would rather say that plainly than print a blanket copyright line that may not be accurate. An uncredited photograph on this site is an unfinished record, not a claim of ownership.

If you took a photograph that appears here, write to us. We will credit it as you want it credited, or remove it, whichever you prefer. No argument and no delay.

People in the photographs

The same applies to anyone pictured. If you appear in an image on this site and would rather not, tell us and it comes down. You do not need to give a reason.

Cultural information

Descriptions of languages, festivals and practices on this site are written from community accounts and from published scholarship. Where accounts differ, we say that they differ rather than picking one. Where we have not verified something, the page shows the gap instead of a confident sentence.

Corrections from people whose culture this is take precedence over anything we have read.
